Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I hired someone to install an in ground pool and paid them in full for the job. They subcontracted a company to do the plaster portion. Unfortunately they didn't pay the plaster company for their work and they're threatening to file a lien on my home. I need to know if they can legally do that since I didn't hire the plaster company. And since I paid the pool builder in full.

Yes they probably can, although if the subcontractor did not give you a 20-day preliminary notice that they would be on your job as a sub, and/or failed to follow all the other formalities for perfecting a lien, it would be invalid. But mechanics liens exist for exactly the situation you are in.
