Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Homestead your home

We have over $20,000.00 in credit card debt. Both my husband and I receive Social Securty. I was working part time and was laid off in Aug. My question is if we file for bankruptcy would we be able to protect our house if it was Homesteaded? We owe about $70,000.oo on our mortage. Also what would happen if we just didn't pay the Credit Cards? We are able to make the payments on the Credit Cards now because I recieve unemployment benefits but I only have 3 or 4 months left. Thank you very much
