Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
Housesitting vs. rent
My duaghter stayed in a friend's apartment for 2 months in San Francisco and now she wants rent. She understood that she was to pay for cable/power, get mail, etc. There was never any formal agreement to pay rent and the friend is asking for the $$ after she returned. What can she do so this friend will leave her alone. The friend wants to take her to arbritration, but my daughter feels she did nothing wrong, so would it appear that she did by agreeing to go to arbitration?

Re: Housesitting vs. rent
Where was the friend at this time? What was the purpose of staying in the apartment? I don't understand why she should go to arbitration, unless the friend already filed a lawsuit and the court is requiring arbitration. Perhaps your daughter should tender the amount she believes she owes for cable and power, and keep a copy of the check, her letter, and the return receipt.
