Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Can a husband represent his wife ''pro per'' in court

My wife was sued recently on a limited civil case in California for an old defaulted consumer debt (the debt was in both our names but strangely only she was sued, and an expired statute of limitations applies). We can't afford a lawyer but the case and issues are simple and I've represented myself in court before and can do this, but she can't. I filed the answer to the complaint for her, but she has to appear at a Case Management Conference next week and is too nervous and unprepared. Can I speak for her at the court? (can't find this answer anywhere).

Also I learned the Statute of Limitations applied here only after I filed the original answer to the complaint so I wish to amend the first answer with a demurrer incorporating this issue. Is this substitution allowed?

You can't represent her, and if you didn't mention the statute HER ATTORNEY will need to file a motion to amend the answer.
