Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
My husband, who I am separated from for the last three years, had a handyman business in early 2000, which lasted only about a year. He replaced a roof and received $1700 in payment. Winter came, roof leaked, he was sued in court in Merced for $5000. He never answered complaint or went to court, so judgment against him. He moved to Missouri for a while then moved back to Ca. His son in Missouri has been getting calls from collection agents saying bounty hunters are looking for him, etc. This is not the first time. Husband is disabled and on SSI, SSD, and is 66. He cannot pay this judgment at all. Any recourse or advice?

First of all, there are no bounty hunters looking for your husband. This is a ploy used by the collection agency to scare your husband into responding and paying the judgment.
Is there any recourse? Possibly. When was the judgment obtained? California has a 10 year statute of limitations to collect on any judgment, unless the judgment is renewed.
I would need more facts to determine the risk your husband faces in not responding to the judgment.
