Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
A law firm is harassing me to pay a debt, I do owe the debt, but they are trying to get me to pay a lot more than what was owed, I am sure of the interest charges, but I don't feel that it could be 3000.00 in fees, is this a scam, they threatened that they are going to garnish my wages right away.....Is this legal, and if so, do I have the right to sue them?

It's not necessarily a scam, but debt collection is a ruthless take-no-prisoners game that affects millions. Unfortunately, harassment is not a unique element. In my business, filing for protection in federal bankruptcy court is the often the cheapest, fastest solution to otherwise suffering the predicament of garnished wages and other losses.
This answer (as well as our Web site) doesnt address all facts & implications of the question; its general info, not legal advice to be relied upon; it creates no attorney-client relationship; it may be pertinent to CA only; its independent of other answers. Hire legal counsel before acting or refraining from bankruptcy/legal action.
1. They might or might not be able to garnish your wages, but they would have to sue you first and win.
2. They might or might not own the debt.
3. They might or might not really be lawyers.
