Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
I have a law office claiming I am being sued for $10,000 from a student loan I did not know I had. What can I do?

It is possible that they have you confused with someone else. I would hire an attorney to contact the opposing attorney to go over the documentation they have. If you owe money, the best thing to do is to negotiate a repayment plan. If you don't owe the money, you may need to fight the lawsuit until you can give them enough evidence to show that they are wrong or you can get a judge or jury to rule in your favor.
If you feel confident enough, contact the attorney yourself, say that you do not believe you owe the money or have a student loan, and ask for any underlying loan documentation they may have. Be sure to get the social security number or other ID number for the person they are claiming owes the money. You may be able to convince the lawyer that they have the wrong person.
I believe that you can get information on any student loans that may be under your name through the website located at http://www.nslds.ed.gov/nslds_SA/ You will need to get a PIN, and the instructions are under the FAQ section of the website. I have never used this site, however, and don't know what else you may need to provide.
Best of luck to you.
