Legal Right for cusomer

A collecton agency contacted my home but my grandfather picked up the phone the woman demanded that he give his social security number and he did not give it to her she demanding him to give his information on the phone and my grandfather hung up the phone she called back and said that this is the police department is this a violation of the fair credit act?

Yes. The collection agent must identify him or herself as a debt collector. In addition, by stating that he was calling from the police department, he was implying that a crime was being committed and that you could face criminal penalties for your debt. The only "crime" being committed was his misrepresentation. You can send a "cease and desist" letter to the agency, and inform them never to call you or your family again, and explain what had happened.
