Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

My live-in boyfriend added me to his Dicover Card account as an authorized user. The credit company issued me a card on my name but the same account. Years later he filed for bankrupcy and the credit company took his name out of the account, leaving my name on it and billing me for payment on the balance. Can they do that? How can I challenged the validity of my responsibility toward this account? Please help.

If you were only an authorized user, then you are not obligated to the credit card company for the debt. If it's more than four years since the last payment, the statute of limitation on the debt has run, in any case. If you've received a letter from the bank, dispute the debt in writing and tell them they need to show you where you are responsible for the account.
