Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
I lost my job and became ill. As a result I did not pay my credit card bill although I asked to make payment arrangements and was denied. My request was repeated some 5 times always with the same response. I recently was contacted by a different division of the CC company and was offered a chance to make small paymentws unti my econo9mic situation changed. During the conversation, I learend that the account had been "charged off" and that fact reported and posted on my credit report. I asked if my making payments would alter the report to say "paid as agreed" and was told that no other information would until the total bill was paid. If I don't pay what would their next step most likely be?
1 Answer from Attorneys
Their next step will be to either file a lawsuit against you before the expiration of the statute of limitations or they will keep passing the debt off to new collection agencies that will continue to contact you in an effort to collect.
