Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

medical bills

I have 2 medical bills from 2004. One was sent to collection, one stayed the same. My question is, I have been sending payments on a regular basis. Now they want me to pay more money! I am on Widow's Pension, and have my own cleaning business. I cannnot pay anymore then what I am. Can they demand more from me? They want me to declare all my personal information to verify my income, incoming and outgoing. I think they are asking to much.

What percent of a bill am I mandated to pay? Plus they are charging me 10% interest on these bills.

Thank You for you answer.

Re: medical bills

You are probably talking with outside collectors. I suggest you contact the collection department if they are hospitals. They often will reduce the bills drastically if they know of your financial circumstance. The only way they can have legal muscle to collect from you is if they file a lawsuit and get a judgment. Then they could levy against your bank account and perhaps your real property if you own your own home.
