Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

medical bills

I have 2 medical bills from 2004. One was sent to collection, one stayed the same. My question is, I have been sending payments on a regular basis. Now they want me to pay more money! I am on Widow's Pension, and have my own cleaning business. I cannnot pay anymore then what I am. Can they demand more from me? They want me to declare all my personal information to verify my income, incoming and outgoing. I think they are asking to much.

What percent of a bill am I mandated to pay? Plus they are charging me 10% interest on these bills.

Thank You for you answer.

Re: medical bills

You could just tell them to take a hike. They worst they can do is file a lawsuit and get a judgment. If so, they can't touch your pension (it's exempt), and it is difficult to collect from someone who is self employed.

They may or may not be entitled to charge you 10% interest, depending on what the agreement with the original creditor is.

There is a good chance you could negotiate a discount on the bills -- either with a lump sum payment, or a reduction in the monthly payments.
