Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

minor receiving medical bills/collection bills

My father is legally responsible to provide me with health insurance until I am 25. However, when I was 16 he moved to Texas. Eventually my mom obtained health coverage for my siblings and me but before she was able to I was diagnosed with cervical cancer and it required immediate treatment. Almost everything was paid off before i turned 18 but before it could even be paid in full it was sent to collections so now my credit is COMPLETELY ruined. And my medical bills have also ruined my mothers credit. what can i do?

Re: minor receiving medical bills/collection bills

First, seriously consider reimbursement by any menas necessary from your father given he was legally obligated to pay. Next, I would have a statement explaining why you had the payment problem put in your credit report. Emphasize that these are bills your dad was obligated to pay, you were a minor at the time, he didn't pay the bills as he was required, and you still did the right thing and paid them off. Also emphasize that you are independent now, over 18 and more than capable of functioning responsibly as to credit.
