Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

My mother-in-law opened up several credit cards under my wife's name. She has racked up a total of approx. $10,000. Is there way to get this debt removed from our credit and names with out sending my wife's mother to jail? I dont care what happens to her financially or credit wise, I just dont want her to go to jail.

The only way to get the credit card to drop the charges in my experience is to file fraud charges against your mother in law.
