Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Mother-in-law stole my identity

My mother-in-law has stolen my husbands identity several times, to start various utility accounts. Now a new account has appeared on our credit report under his name AND mine. She claims that she has hired a lawyer, who is in process of removing this debt from our credit report, and transferring it to her own. Is this possible/legal in the state of CA?

Re: Mother-in-law stole my identity

You may contact the utility company and tell them this is a case of identity theft. Then they will have to remove the negative from your credit report or you can sue them
