Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I have an outstand debt that has been sent to a collection agency which has added over $1000.00 of their own fees. They want me to settle with an amount of $2900.00 to be paid all at once.I asked them if I could make payments and they daid no. Please advise.

How old is this debt (when did you make the last payment)? What kind of debt is it? Did the collection agency send you anything in writing? I would not speak to them. Whatever you do don't give them any of your financial information.
