Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I owe a lot of debt to credit cards companies. What are they legally allowed to do if I can't pay it? I live in California and I am married. Can they garnish mine or my wife's wages, take my personal property, cancel my bank account?

They generally can't do anything against you until they file suit and obtain a judgment. Then they could fo most of the things you suggest.
