owing money

i know that i have to sue the person in the state which she lives, but how do i go about it and am i entitle to also sue for the cost of getting to and from this other state?and what if i get there and the other party does not show up? ilive in ny ans she lives in california

How much is owed. If it's substantial, hire a lawyer to assist you. If it's $7500 or under, you can sue in small claims. Flights are cheap these days. Besides, CA is nice in the winter.

Assuming there is some connection to New York -- e.g., the contract was entered there -- you can obtain a judgment in New York and then obtain a "sister state judgment" in California. You can then enforce the judgment in California. Your costs of flying out here would not be covered unless you have a contract that says such costs are covered if the loan is not repaid.
