Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
what to do when parent using ss# to open credit cards
What options does a person have if their parent is using their social security number to open credit cards which are in turn affecting their credit? If it isn't going to stop, do they need to change their social security number or are there ways to protect your current number?

That is really improper and fraud on the credit card companies as well as identity theft to you. You need to confront that parent and threaten to report it to the police and/or file a lawsuit.

The victim should check his/her credit report and notify creditors of the unauthorized opening of the accounts. Also, place a statement on all three companies' credit reports of identity theft, so that credit providers will have to make additional efforts to verify identity.
