Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Parents used my name for credit accounts

My parents used my name for 3 credit accounts and they have gone into collections since they refuse to pay them. They say since they are in my name they don't have to pay them but my mother signed my name on the account & the bills went to their home. It's about 12K and I can't afford to pay the bills. Can I sue them or take them to small claims? They live in IA and I live in CA.

If your parents opened the credit cards without your consent and/or forged your signature, you have cause of action to sue them. The Small Cliams Court in California has jurisdiction for maximum of $7,500. You should immediately consult an Iowa attorney to protect your legal rights.
