Not willing to pay after auto accident

On Mar.17,2004, I was sitting in my van in a parking lot waiting for my son to return. Instead of putting his truck in reverse, a man in a Ford f350 pulled forward & crashed into my front passenger side(signal light&bumper).Unfortunately, feeling it was not serious enough to warrarnt a police report, we exchanged info...on Mar.30th,I got estimate.Tried several times to connect with man,then a series of family problems kept me from following up.It is now,about 7 mos.later, made contact & he claims it to be SO LONG AGO, he only remembers cracking front light & HE wants to get a few more estimates! What do I do?
