Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

can't pay the collecion agencies

My credit report has agencies listed which I did at one time have cc with, due to divorce, I was unable to pay my bills alot of these accounts are going to be either charged off or written off in 2003. I still can not pay these debts. When they're written/charged off, do they still stay on my credit report or do they automatically come off. Most of these debts are 5-7 years old, so I don't think bankruptcy would be benificial. Can they keep my tax returns, can they garnish my wages? Help I'm planning on getting married in the spring of 2003 and I don't want my debts to tarnish my new spouses credit

Chargeoffs do show up on your credit. They are a strong factor in lowering your credit score. However, they are still subject to the same time limits as any other item on a credit report. Most items fall off after seven years. The time does not reset once the account becomes a chargeoff.

No one can garnish your wages or lien your tax returns without a judgment or some other court order.
