Tried to Pay-Then I received a Summons

Dear Attorneys,

Two years ago my husband lost his job and I could not make my credit card payments. A month ago after refinancing our house I attempted to pay off, by way of a settlement, the credit card debt. First I called the company itself who after four different calls lead me to thier legal dept. I called the Legal Dept. After several minutes I was told they could not find my information at all. They asked me to call back with the actual Credit card account number. I did. They still could not find anything refering to me. I asked them to send me a letter stating that. They said they would. They asked me to fax a copy of the billing statement so the Dept. head could sign off on it. I did. I then put the money into developing my business. Two days ago I got a Summons in an attempt to sue me for the total amount. Can I protect myself somehow? How? Thank you for your time.

You'll have to answer the lawsuit (quickly), but an attorney may also be able to work out a settlement with them before the lawsuit proceeds further.
