Phone Calls from Collectors

My son gave my phone number for his contact. Do I have the right to tell the collector NOT to phone my home? It stresses me out to get home and find message on answering machine for all to here that is sitting in the room....... what are my rights.........

Tell the collector they have the wrong number and to not call again.

If the messages include any information on how they are trying to collect a debt, save the tape or make a recording. That is a violation of state and federal laws.

Contacting you when you have already told them that is not your son's number is also a violation.

Feel free to tell them that some of the largest lawsuit verdicts against debt collectors have been those where the debt collector was harassing a third party like a relative or neighbor.
