Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
I have just received a bill for over $400, for my daughter's birth. My daughter will be THREE YEARS OLD in a few weeks. The OB's office says they're just now getting things in order, because their previous billing company was not "doing their job." Can they legally come after me for this?

The statute of limitations on this debt is probably four years, as I assume you signed a document indicating that you would be liable for any cost of the procedure that was not covered by your insurance. These agreements are extremely common, and by virtue of having signed a written agreement for the repayment of the debt, they have four years in which to sue you to collect the debt. Just understand that even if you get past four years, they will still try to collect the debt, they just probably cannot sue you for it. Additionally, is it worth damaging your credit over $400? They will almost certainly report the debt as unpaid if you do not work out payment arrangements, and it will damage your credit.
