Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
I received a hospital bill and paid it immediately with a company healthcare credit card. At the time I paid I requested an itemized billing as the bill was shockingly high. Over a year passed before I received a call from the hospital asking if I got my itemized bill sent early in the month. To make a long story short...they are claiming I never paid. I do not have proof that we paid as my husband is no longer employed by that company. Even if they weren't paid I feel I submitted the payment in good faith that they would follow up and bill the health care card that was covered at 100% After following up with them last week to assure the bill has been deleted from our records I now have a "collection letter" What is the best plan of action to fight this?

You need to track down proof that the bill was paid. You'll have to contact the previous employer and insist that they provide proof that the bill was paid - they generally have an obligation to do so even if he is no longer employed. Your good intention in paying them does not get you off the hook - either they were paid or they were not paid, if they were not paid, you still owe them for the services rendered.
