Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I received a letter yesterday from the District Attorney Check Recovery Office stating that I have until mid February to pay for a check written in November of 2001. If not paid, then a warrent for my arrest will be issued. Can they now come to me requesting these funds, considering that it has been 8 years since this check was written? Can I fight this?

Thank you.

Contact a local attorney to review the document. This sounds very shady to me and might even be an attempt to steal your identity.

I would have a lawyer write them a letter telling them to go pound sand. The company that is using the DA's letterhead is just a collection agency. They should be sued for writing letters like that (based on an obviously stale claim), If you were to ignore them probably nothing would happen; and if some crazed DA were to attempt to prosecute you it would be your lucky day, as you would then have a good lawsuit for violation of your civil rights.
