i have received a summons for a credit card debt. what can i do?

1. Stop worrying. You will survive this.

2. Was the lawsuit filed by the original creditor, or by a collection agency (junk debt buyer)?

3. Do you think you have any defenses to the lawsuit, for example the debt is more than 4 years old? Or that it isn't your debt?

4. Most debts can be wiped out in a bankruptcy, if you have a great deal of debt this might be an option to explore.

5. Have your lawsuit reviewed by an attorney. My aggressive defense of bogus credit card lawsuits was featured in a New York Times article on 7/31/2010. I'd be very happy to look at your lawsuit, free of charge.

6. If you plan to fight the lawsuit, make sure you file a response with the court within 30 days after you receive it.
