Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

What is someone requirement to shop proff of a debt

I am being billed for some college course I took that I believe were paid by Financial Aid and have documents that say they were paid. The School states that I am wrong and must pay. They have been unwilling to provide any proof. Do I have to pay without proof that I owe them?

No, but they may simply prove it in court getting a judgment against you, which I am sure you'd like to avoid. As a result, I would certainly take it upon myself to check with Financial Aid. If they can furnish you with evidence of their payment, you can attempt to furnish that to the school, and, if they don't back off, at least you know that you will win any legal action they take.
