Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Are we responsible for the debt of a disceased relative?

My mother-in-law recently died leaving no will. She had a car, stuff in her apartment, and debt of approx. $9,000.00. She has 4 sons, all of whom live out of state and some who haven't spoken to her or had anything to do with her for years. I would like to know if we are legally responsible for any of her debt? Will the creditors just have to write her debt off? Please help!

Re: Are we responsible for the debt of a disceased relative?

No you are not, unless you take her assets. The assets should be sold to pay the creditors.
