Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Returned Item - Unable to pay

About two months ago I agreed to purchase an item of computer equipment from a coworker. We agreed on a price and I paid him by check. I few days later I was laid off, and a few days after that my check bounced. A couple weeks later my coworker called to confront me about the check. I told him I was working on a temp job and not making even half of what I was before, but that I'd make the check good in another week or so after I got paid. Money was running very tight and I didn't pay him as promissed, so I securley boxed up the piece of equipment, which was in the same condition as when I bought it, and returned it to him via DHL. Now he is calling me several times a day at home and at my temp job, even though I have asked him repeatedly not to, and harrassing me. He has more than once threatened to get me fired if I don't send him the money, even though I returned the item to him.

My question is, if I have returned the item to him, and he has not sent it back to me, do I have to pay him for it? Can he get me fired by calling my employer, and if he does, what is my recourse? And lastly, because I have asked repeatedly not to call and harrass me, how do I get him to stop?? Thank you for your help!
