Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I've searched and searched and can't quite find this question anywhere so my apologies if this has been asked and I'm looking in the wrong place.

There is a judgment from a creditor on my public record from 2011. After contacting the original creditor today, I was told that the debt had been sold to another agency back in 2013.

I understand that judgments expire here in CA after 10 years, in the event that they aren't renewed before the 10 years expires. My question then becomes, is the new collection agency able to renew the judgment or is only the original creditor able to do so?
