Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
Security systems
Have contract with security company for home protection. After reveiving the componants for the system in the mail I realized the unit could not be installed in my home. I tried to return the system but the company said they could not accept it back. The system was never installed nor any security provided. Now I'm being contacted by a collection agency for 3 years of service I never recieved. The company says the are under no obligation to provide a service only to offer it. I've asked for a bill or statement to see what I'm being charged for, the collection agency refuses to provide it. They want me to release my credit card and checking account info to them. Is there anything I can do to find out if this is a legitmate debt and if so can anyone explain why I have to pay for services I've never received?

Re: Security systems
You should have a lawyer review the contract and related documents. Did you deal with a salesman who indicated the system would work at your home? It sounds like there may be several defenses available to you.
Did you pay for the system with a credit card? If so, you may try to reverse the charges and send the item back (by some method that provides you with package tracking and delivery confirmaation). Call your credit card company and ask what you can do.
Re: Security systems
First, did they promise you the system would work? Do you have it in writing?
Second, ask the collection agency for verification of the debt. They are required to provide it to you.
Third, you may want to consult with an attorney depending on the amount of the debt.
