You can file a timely "Answer" at the court; this entails a significant fee if you do not qualify for a fee waiver. The Answer would postpone judgment and collection, which is important, but beyond buying a bit of time, it would not actually pay for a presumed valid debt. A bankruptcy filing may be advisable depending upon other circumstances. Filing a bankruptcy petition is a common means to put an immediate stay on such proceedings and permit you to conclusively eliminate that debt.
This answer (as well as our Web site) doesnt address all facts & implications of the question; its general info, not legal advice to be relied upon; it creates no attorney-client relationship; it may be pertinent to CA only and certain facts may be relevant to the San Diego court only; its independent of other answers. Seek legal counsel before acting or refraining from bankruptcy/legal action; not all results apply to all persons.
