Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
I was served papers for a lawsuit in Los Angeles county against myself with regards to a credit card debt. They are suing for just under $1,500 (the original credit card limit was $750). I've tried calling some attorney's but they have all replied that it's not cost effective for such a small case. So what do I do now? I'm thinking the best option is probably to try and settle out of court on a monthly payment basis; are there any reliable companies doing debt settlements?

The first thing to do is make sure to file and serve an answer to the complaint. Courts have fee waiver programs if you can't afford the filing fee. Then, you'd be in a better position to negotiate than if you defaulted and fees and costs were tacked on to a default judgment. Form answers can be found on the Judicial Council website. Research affirmative defenses you might assert in the answer.
