Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I have been served a summons by one of my creditors attorneys. I cannot pay the amount they are requesting. Although I do owe the money Should I file a response with the court. I would like to buy some more time. I can pay them partial but they will not setttle.

If you do not respond, then a default judgment may be awarded against you. Collection can include attachment of assests and wage garnishment.
