Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

serving small claims out of state

I am in the process of filing a small claim against a company outside my state which never paid me for some work I did for them. I checked with the Secretary of State to see if they had an agent in California but they don't. What is the procedure for serving small claims to company outside California that don't have appointed agents?
