Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
I co signed on a friends lease a year ago.never lived in the apartment...was just a co signer. recently a debt collector has been calling me to collect a debt for damages to the apartment. I was just helping out a friend who had no where else to go...originally had the intention of moving in but circumstances changed and her boyfriend moved in instead...what do i do? what are my rights? how do i speak to the collector?

You are as liable for the damage as if you had done it yourself. That's what happens when you co-sign anything. You accept full responsibility for what the primary obligor does.
