Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
Small Claims Court
I am being threatened with a small claims suit. I made a poor decision and was convicted for shoplifting last December (at Target in California). I did not end up with any property.
They (a Law firm in Alabama) are demanding $500 for Civil damages. If I don't pay, they are threatening to sue for legal costs + the civil damages.
Can they sue for legal expenses? Doesn't a representative from Target have to present his/her case in California? Finally, can they sue for damages while no property was actually taken?
Please, I am very concerned and need help.
Thank you -- Jonathan

Re: Small Claims Court
I've read that companies are doing this just to scare you out of your money so that you don't do it again. I can't think of any legal theory to hold you liable civilly. Perhaps others can chime in here.
