Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I sold a dog for $800 on 03-01-10. The buyer put a deposit of $400 down and was to return the next day 03-02-10, to pay the remaining $400 and to sign a sales contract for limited registration on the dog. Because it was her husband's birthday surprise, I allowed her to take the dog home on 03-01-10. Within four hours she phoned me, staying the dog had slipped out of his collar and ran away. I have spent every day and night searching the area for the dog. I have placed numerous ads, posted photo fliers and enlisted the help of my friends trying to locate the missing dog, but have had no luck in locating the dog in seven days.

Do I have any legal grounds to demand full payment for the dog?

You are entitled to full payment because you fulfilled your part of the contract. This is no different that if you had sold the buyer an $800 car and they crashed if after paying you half of the price.
