Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I sold a treadmill online, but received a large check asking to send the difference back. My bank gave me the money after a few days after deposit, so I figured it cleared.. It didn't. Tdidn't think they could release money until the check cleared. Are they liable in any way?
