Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

If someone stated both verbally and in the form of emails, that they would pay rent and utilities as they said they would, and did not, do I have a case?

E-mails are written evidence and would normally be admissible as admissions by the opponent. Off you go to small claims court!

There's a minor problem with Mr. Stone's answer. If the agreement was not in return for something you agreed to do or not do, then there is no contract and nothing but an unenforceable promise. So without more facts, Mr. Stone should not have answered your question.
