Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
Statute of Limitations for medical debt
I just got a bill by a collection agency for over 400 dollars in debt that I suppose to owe to a medical laboratory for medical tests performed in November 1997. I do not recall the supposed services and have not gotten a bill until now. The sum of 400 $ also includes about 200$ in interest.
Mostly, I'm wondering if the statute of limitations has expired on this kind of debt. I understand for most debts it is four years, but I'm not sure if it's the same for medical bills.
If the statute of limitations has not expired, how should I handle this? As I said, this is the first I have heard of this bill and it's seven years old. Can they still charge me? Are they allowed to collect interest, even though I had not been informed of this debt before? Do they have to prove if I actually owe this debt?
As I said I don't recall it and I usually always pay my bills on time.
I live in Southern California.
Thanks for your help.
