Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Stolen car liability

Several years ago my car was stolen and crashed by the thieves. Today I received a notice that during the course of the theft a hit and run was committed, and stating that I am responsible for the $1700.00 in damages. The car was not insured for theft at the time, and I was not asked to pay for many other damages that the thieves caused. Am I responsible for this?

Re: Stolen car liability

No, the law is very clear here. You are not responsible for damages caused by a thief. I have litigated this very issue dozens of times.
