Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Struggling to pay debt that is not his

My friend's boyfriend is 24 and lives at home with his mom. He's a student who works for his mom: he delivers newspapers and she's his manager. A few to several years ago, his mom was unable to work under her own name (I don't know why), so she used his name without his knowledge. She never periodically took out taxes like she was supposed to, and ended up owing between $2-3,000. She informed him of this predicament and said she was sorry. He has been paying this off for some time, with no help from her. (On top of this she charges him rent, but sometimes lets him slide on it because she knows he's paying for this also). She will not pay the money because "she is the type of person who feels that because she has apologized to him, it is good enough." Meanswhile, he is struggling to get out on his own; and because it's his mom/manager he doesn't want a bad relationship with her to result).*** Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

What he really should do is turn his mom in to the cops and sue her but he is unlikely to do so. There is nothing else he can really do about it. Oh, wait; there is one thing he can do. He can marry you and let his mother destroy your life too.
