Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

We have been sued by a collection agency for a hospital medical bill from Oct 2008. They are suing for the doctor, xray office, hospital, anesthesiologist, etc, lawyer fees, and interest. We are obligated for the debt. The hospital billing office told us if the kids qualified for MediCal, they would discharge our debt to them. Health and Human Services gave us the runaround for 2 years about putting one or all of us on MediCal. They finally qualified us Oct 2010. We called the hospital billing to inform them and they said "that debt went to collections, good bye". Then, in Nov 2010, their collection agency (?) sued us. We just got served and have 30 days to put in a written response.
