You must file a responsive pleading -- i.e. an answer, demurrer, motion to strike -- within 30 days of service of the summons upon you, and not from the date stamped by the court on the summons and complaint.
You can find a fillable answer form at http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/forms/fillable/pldc010.pdf . However, the court does not give you advice on what to fill in, including affirmative defenses which are very important to plead.
If you are goint to answer, you need to allege affirmative defenses. Furthermore, service by maiI must be agreed to. I have been successfull in lowering the amount of debt demanded with reasonable payment plans. Contact me directly.
