Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I am being sued in small claims by installment loan company in California. the interest is 177%. the orginal loan amount was $2600. I have paid about $2700 back. I got too over my head with payday loans so i had to regain control. I signed up with a payday loan debt settlement company which secured a re-payment plan with this company, however the installment loan company decided to serve me with papers. I have paid back the principal of the loan but they want an additional $3500 from me. Are there any laws that help out consumers with these types of loans. I am a California resident and the loan was done online. Should i retain the help of an attorney. I know that I can't have one represent me in court?? is there any laws that might protect me.
