Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
Sued in Another State
I lost my job in or around 2002 and couldn't pay my credit card bills. I recently checked my credit report and discovered that i was sued in NY when I live in california. Needless to say I lost the case. The collectors began sending me court documents for the local court here in California with a case number but when i checked with my local court they said that the number doesn't belong to them. The documents that they have sent are not stamped by the court nor are they signed by their attorney that they say is handling the case... Is this legal?

You may have some rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. You need to talk to an attorney and have someone review the documents. This is one of those questions where the documents need to be reviewed.
You should go to www.naca.net to find an attorney who may be able to help you.
