Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Summons Says ''1 To 10''?

I was just served a Summons by a credit card company. Under ''Notice to Defendant'' my name is listed. Then a few lines are skiped and directly above ''You Are Being Sued By PlantifF:'' the words ''Does 1 To 10'' are typed.

What does this mean? Thank you!

They are suing fictitous people. This is common in the law. The defendant gets sued and then either 10 or 100 Doe defendants. This way, if you come back and say, "I dont owe the money, Jesse James owes the money" they can add Jesse James as a defendant by replacing Doe 1 with Jesse James.
